We experience touch as a unified sensation and by the time our perception becomes conscious, a lot of editing has been done. Objectivity is farther away than we might think, even with a sense so closely related to hard-facts, like touch.
Strolling through a local foreign language library, I stumbled onto TOUCH, by David Linden. Looked through, found it to be of interest and decided to have a go at it.
I was looking for a translation of all the science into everyday behaviors, something practical for my work. The expectations were met; however, you need to be patient if you choose to read this book because 90% of it is medical science (in English, in the version I read!).
Difficult as it may have been to read “Touch”, I did come out of it with some very interesting observations and learning. All text in inverted commas in the following text is a direct quotation from the book TOUCH, by David Linden.
How touch works
Touch is so much more than facts, objects and circuits which allow information to move from the sensors to the brain and back to the parts which can perform the needed action, like withdrawal.
We have “two separate touch systems in the skin, operating in parallel, which report fundamentally different aspects of our tactile world”: the facts and the emotions they trigger within us.
“Our perception of a sensory stimulus is crucially dependent upon our expectations, as they have been formed by our life experience up to that moment. When there’s a mismatch between expectation and sensation, it’s a sign that something weird is happening, and our perception of that sensation is fundamentally altered.”
While making sense of the touch information, context is key. The sensory experience itself is altered by the context.
It’s all blended
We experience touch as a unified sensation. The map our brain interprets as “touch” is built through parallel information transmission, interpretation, and sometimes with interventions.

With the gurus of collective conscious – horses – leading them forward, EAHAE (International Association of Horse Assisted Education) chooses to dive into the Greater Promise. What do you choose as an individual, an organization or a business leader?
In March the EAHAE International Association for Horse Assisted Education met for their 14th Annual Conference in Knüllwald, Germany.
The Conference welcomed over 70 participants from 16 different countries to discuss EAHAE’s vision to see Horse Assisted Education pioneer the next phase of Leadership Development.
Management experts, coaches and business consultants from the USA, Russia, Europe, Kazakhstan and the UAE came together in the presence of horses to experiment, learn how to lead and to be led, inspiring a new level of connectedness and passion within the organization.
Drawing on the participants’ diverse strengths, the conference combined breakout sessions with facilitated horse assisted exercises, mirroring EAHAE client’s experiences. The collective learning was profound. Sanny Cassani and Luis Praxmarer (HorseDream Austria) led a session on the context of change happening today at an unprecedented rate. The session reinforced how effective leadership of such change, has never been more necessary.
The work of EAHAE and horses assisted education has never been more relevant and required.
Horses have always played an important role in human development. From transport, to the military. From their role in the agricultural and industrial revolutions to sport and entertainment. It seems, as humanity develops, so does the purpose of the horse. And so today, as our world stands at the edge of the next Industrial Revolution – the Technological one – we once again look to our Equine partners, to show us the way.
Horses have survived 50 million years as prey animals on a predator occupied planet. The secret to their survival is their ‘herdpower’. ‘Herdpower’ refers to the collective consciousness experienced by every horse in a herd. This consciousness connects them to their purpose and shapes each horse’s choices and willingness to operate together as one unit.

I got what I wanted: a lesson about “being” before “doing”. A slow paced experience in a fast forward world, with wonderful partners: people and horses.
It’s been an unusually busy project calendar during the 4 weeks before my attendance to the EAHAE conference.
Our team’s decision was to attend the workshop on the Thursday before the conference, so we set out one day earlier than previously planned. I was looking for a break, a few days when I could breathe in and out without watching the clock and paying attention to others’ needs.
Jackie offered me a full-size gift through the workshop on Thursday.
First, it was the request to contribute with the one word I felt best described my intention for the day. The Romanian words for Thank you popped out of my heart and curiously enough I simply accepted it and said it out loud before I had the chance to ask myself “what am I thankful for?”
